From Doctor Who (Classic Who) The Web of Fear
There are people who say that Dr. Who is sexist towards female characters. I respect their opinion, assuming they have seen a lot more Dr. Who than I have (which is practically none), but the scenes like this one tend to make me disagree with them.
doctor who has been going on for so long that it’s practically like the bible: you can find something in there to back up ANY idea, if you look close enough. but regarding female characters, i don’t think it’s so much that people say “doctor who is sexist towards female characters!” as “stephen moffat is sexist towards female characters”. because he is. over the 50 years doctor who has been on air, there have been zillions of writers and zillions of female characters, all with varying levels of feminism/sexism relating to the era during which they were written.
in the 1960s, the scene in the gifset above was an awesome and badass move. to be honest, it’s a scene that would probably still work today. however, in general, doctor who in 2013 is not as feminist in a 2013 context as 1960s doctor who was n in a 1960s context.
how can anyone not love this show.
